Qualifications:
Part of a Movement for Change:
One thing that differentiates me from others in the race is also tied to the Green Party. The statewide candidates are running as a team that offer a real alternative to the present corporate parties. We are not tied to past politics but to ideas and ideals as specified in our detailed platform. (For more information see Platform of the Illinois Green Party 2008)
The Role of Government:
The role of government is to provide basic services
- We need to end the move to “privatize” traditional public services such as education and prisons.
- We must provide services more efficiently and make sure that they are accessible to the entire population.
If elected, I would
- Work to eliminate the double standard in law enforcement that puts too many African-Americans and other minorities in jail and on death row.
- Work towards the abolition of capital punishment
- Seek a sensible drug policy emphasizing treatment, not jail. These policies would actually save the State money.
- Work to protect the rights of consumers and all citizens. This would include, but not be limited to, the right of a women's reproductive choice as well as the civil rights for gay and lesbian individuals.
Cleaning up Illinois Politics:
Ending the “culture of corruption” is a major focus of the Illinois Green Party
If elected Illinois Attorney General, one of my top priorities would be to help combat the influence that money has on politics. I am proud that the Green Party does not accept corporate donations.
I moved to Illinois at the time Secretary of State Paul Powell died and shoe boxes full of cash were found in his residence. Since I have lived here, a majority of the former governors have been sentenced to jail for money related crimes.
If elected Illinois Attorney General, I pledge to use the power of that office to route out corruption and take political money out of government.
